Woodchopping at 2024 Nowra Show

This year’s woodchop program will again take centre stage at the 2024 Nowra Show. Briefly appearing at the annual Show prior to World War I before being a permanent fixture in the later 1920s, the woodchop arena has provided exciting entertainment for the whole family over many years.

In collaboration with NSW South Coast and Tablelands Axemen’s Association, Nowra Show’s competition is regarded as a prestigious event on the Woodchopping calendar attracting some of the best axemen in the world. This year’s show again welcomes South Island New Zealand axemen return keen to compete alongside competitors from throughout NSW, Victoria, QLD and WA.

This event allows participants to hone their skills and axes in preparation for the big event in Sydney. The wood we use is the same as that prepared for the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Axemen, male & female, aged between 10 years and 80 years compete in events representing various types of chopping and sawing, in an attempt to take home the large prizes on offer.

In the past we have been fortunate to have a number of world champions in attendance including Victoria’s Glen Gillam, NSW’s Brad Delosa and New Zealand’s Adam Low. We are hopeful that these axemen will be again available to attend this year’s competition.

Our local contingent of axemen is always very competitive, with some having competed at the show for decades. The crowds are ever keen to cheer on the locals.

Since the opening of the woodchop pavilion at Nowra Showground in 1999, spectators have become far more comfortable at this most popular part of the Nowra Show program as they are able to sit under cover, sheltered from all the elements while they watch the action. Recently installed lighting and new safety fencing adds to competitor and spectator experience. This year Nowra Show Society also invested in the woodchop arena, painting the spectator stands to ensure this prominent arena remains refreshed and modern, while still acknowledging the history of this long-standing event.

We again welcome Pentarch as major sponsor this year. We are delighted to have Pentarch onboard and sponsoring the annual relay race between New Zealand South Island team and the NSW Team.

This year there will be three races, one on Friday evening, the second during the afternoon on Saturday and the final on Saturday night. New Zealand will be keen to challenge the NSW side. These events provide spectacular viewing and are not to be missed.

The program gets under way at 6.00pm Friday featuring heat 1 of the Walsh & Monaghan Valuers underhand handicap which is followed by Basha’s Interiors standing block event. Pentarch NSW vs NZ Relay race 1 will follow with the evening closing with Bomaderry Bowling Club Butchers Block.

Saturday has a very full program commencing at 10.00am continuing nonstop until approximately 7.00pm. Saturday’s first event is Heat 1 of the Ison & Co standing block handicap. Heat 1 of the Flavours Shoalhaven Underhand Handicap will follow.

The inaugural Ladies 275mm underhand handicap event is being introduced this year as part of the Nowra Show Society’s 150th year anniversary. This will be an exciting event – previous years have had the Ladies jointly competing with the men. This should attract a big crowd as the Ladies go head to head.

Two events not to be missed are the Toby Davis Memorial Underhand Championship event scheduled for 12.30pm and the Dunn & Williams Electrical & Air Conditioning South Coast Championship Standing Block event which is scheduled for 4.00pm. These events promise fast and furious action as all axemen start on the count of three (no handicaps). These two events attract the best axemen at the show.

The first heat of the A & D Tree felling handicap is at 12:15pm.

Other events across the afternoon include Nowra Truck and Tractor Standing Block event Wrights Chainsaw Underhand handicap. Shoalhaven Door Centre Novice Underhand Handicap event and the NSW Axemens Junior (10 – 17 yrs) underhand handicapped event.

Flavours Shoalhaven Standing Block Hard Hitting 3.30pm and Bomaderry Bowling Club Double handed Cross cut sawing and are two events not to miss.

Pentarch NSW vs NZ South Island Relay race 3 concludes the evening commencing around 7.00pm.

A full schedule of events is included in this program.

Thank you to our valued sponsors, and we hope to see everyone at the Nowra Show Woodchop!
